Marriage and Family

What does the Bible say?

Questions to think about

Does the party have an ‘offer’ for parents with young children to help with childcare?
Does a party recognise the significance of and promote marriage?
Does the party have a policy to provide funding for relationship support services, to help families stay together?

What have the parties said?

  • The Conservatives are traditionally more socially conservative than other parties; however, since being in Government they have introduced legislation like same-sex marriage, in conjunction with other parties.
  • Since Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister, they have become tougher on opposing moves to introduce self-ID for transgender people, blocking the SNP’s bid to bring it in within Scotland. They have also spoken up on behalf of sex-based women’s rights.
  • Labour’s position around gender ideology has been fairly unclear in recent years. Initially, Keir Starmer had said that his party would permit self-ID for transgender people. However, they have since changed their position and said that a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria is essential, although they would still simplify the system of changing your gender.
  • The Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, has conceded that the recent Cass report – a damning overview of the NHS approach to gender services for young people – is extremely troubling and has said that he would implement its recommendations.
  • The Lib Dems are strong champions of LGBT+ rights, and have promised to ban all forms of Conversion Therapy. They are more likely to be liberal when it comes to legislation around transgender people, with Ed Davey having said last summer that women could ‘clearly’ have a penis.
  • The Green Party is a strong advocate for bringing in legislation against conversion therapy. It is committed to ensuring LGBTIQA+ people are given explicit protection against harassment and discrimination, and states on its website, “Opt-outs from equality and discrimination laws by religious organisations will not be allowed.”
  • They also strongly support the introduction of self-ID for transgender people, and some prominent Green MSPs recently dismissed the findings of the Cass Review into healthcare for young people questioning their gender.
  • It is unclear where Reform stand with regard to life-issues, such as Assisted Suicide and Abortion, although it is likely that as conscience issues, they would be treated as a free vote.
  • Reform have spoken out strongly against the proliferation of Gender Ideology, stating that there “are only two sexes”, and have particularly opposed its teaching in schools. They would mandate the building of single sex spaces in public toilets and changing rooms.
  • They would introduce a 25% transferable tax marriage allowance, and have said they would frontload the Child Benefit system for children aged 1-4, so that parents might have the choice to spend more time with their children.
  • The SNP pursued reform of gender recognition laws in Scotland, which were blocked at Westminster. This remains party policy although party members have divergent views.
  • Plaid Cymru want to enshrine ‘relationships and experiences of the LGBT+ community… in the statutory element of Relationships and Sex Education’.
  • Plaid Cymru supports reform to the Gender Recognition Act and wants to introduce self-ID for transgender people.
  • The DUP are strong supporters of the family unit as a foundational building block for society. They support pro-family policy including support for a traditional definition of marriage, tax benefits for marriage, stronger financial support for children, increase or removal of the child benefit cap/higher income charge, reform of the tax system to favour families and fully transferable tax free limits between married couples.
  • Traditionally the UUP would have been conservative in its approach to social issues. However, over the last few years, particularly under the more liberal leadership of Doug Beattie, the party has moved to allowing a free vote on issues of morality, In the Northern Ireland context this means the party will not support a motion (a petition of concern) to block the provisions from being passed. Recently, the party leader has been critical of gender self identification and the Scottish Parliament approach to gender and conversion therapy. This may become an election issue for the party as the press seek to tease out the party view.
  • The UUP support a sexual orientation strategy. This has long been a contentious issue between unionism and nationalism. The UUP supporting the strategy is significant as this is a break from the unionist consensus on the issue.
  • The party have been to the forefront of liberalising society in Northern Ireland. They were the first party to issue a whip on the redefinition of marriage and have been vocal supporters of gender ideology.
  • The SDLP has traditionally been a party that was socially conservative. As the age profile of the leadership has changed this has become more liberal. The party offers free votes on social issues, but its current elected representatives are broadly supportive of abortion reform, marriage redefinition, a ban on conversion therapy and gender rights.
  • Alliance are traditionally liberal in social issues. The party have been to the forefront of liberalising society in Northern Ireland. They were the first party to issue a whip on the redefinition of marriage and have been vocal supporters of gender ideology.
  • In terms of family policy the party wants to see ‘no fault’ divorce provisions, similar to those in GB, extended to Northern Ireland. They also want to further reform marriage definition by reforming current marriage laws to put belief marriage on an equal footing with religious marriage and seek to raise the minimum age for marriage and civil partnerships to 18, to mirror the position in GB.
  • Alliance plan to introduce legislation to outlaw conversion therapy that seeks to change, “cure”, suppress a person’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
